David Senger's article "Obama's Worst Pakistan Nightmare" in NYT on January 8, 2009 finally draws the general public attention to Pakistan and its nuclear weapons. Not that the international community needs another scape goat or a source of evil. But, I am glad that the attention to nuclear security issue does go beyond the former Soviet Union republics and Russia.
All the hopes go to Obama and his leadership in disarmament. Today we are more than ready to do something about it, there are a number of outstanding scholars working on the issue (including revolutionary ideas by Ward Wilson), grass roots groups organized themselves in alliances and partnerships and more U.S. politicians talk about the need to finally make practical steps toward disarmament.
I agree with Senger that more attention should be payed to Pakistan in terms of its nuclear security, but at the same time it is essential that the key Western states and Russia commit to disarmament.
